The Finnish government has announced a new visa program targeting remote workers and digital nomads, set to launch in June 2026. The program allows non-EU citizens to reside in Finland for up to 12 months while working for employers based outside the country.

Who qualifies?

Applicants must demonstrate a minimum annual income of €40,000, hold valid health insurance, and prove employment or self-employment with companies registered outside Finland. The visa is not extendable beyond 12 months in its initial form, but officials have hinted at a pathway to longer-term residence for nomads who integrate into the local economy.

How does it compare?

The Finnish offering joins similar programs in Estonia, Portugal, and Spain. What sets it apart is access to Finland's public services, strong infrastructure, and its reputation as the world's happiest country — now in its ninth consecutive year at the top of the UN World Happiness Report.

Application process

Applications will open on June 1, 2026 through Migri's online portal. Processing time is expected to be 2-4 weeks. The application fee is €350.

"We want Finland to be a top choice for global talent," said Migration Minister Mari Rantanen at the announcement in Helsinki.
