Every year on April 30 and May 1, Finland bursts into color for Vappu — a two-day celebration that combines the international workers' day with the ancient tradition of welcoming spring. It's loud, messy, and absolutely essential to Finnish culture.
The traditions
On Vappu Eve (April 30), students gather in city centers wearing their white graduation caps. In Helsinki, thousands converge on the Havis Amanda statue in Kauppatori, where a student cap is ceremonially placed on her head at 6pm. In Tampere, Turku, and Oulu, similar rituals take place.
The food
Vappu has its own culinary traditions. Look for sima (a fermented lemon drink), tippaleipä (deep-fried funnel cakes), and munkki (Finnish doughnuts). Expect long queues at bakeries in the days leading up.
What to expect in 2026
Weather forecasts for this year's Vappu suggest mild temperatures in the south (8-12°C) and crisp conditions in Lapland. Helsinki's traditional Kaivopuisto picnic will return, with an estimated 30,000 attendees expected on May 1.
